FIELD EVALUATION OF LURES AS CANDIDATE ATTRACTANTS FOR COASTAL CULICOIDES IN FLORIDA

Biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae: Culicoides) along the coast of Florida are a severe biting nuisance that can impede outdoor activities. Methods currently available for midge control limited due to environmentally sensitive larval habitats and lack adulticide techniques area-wide population suppression.Homeowners live protect their homes with use fine- meshed window screens fans, coarse low volume applications, adult removal via commercial mosquito traps. There known attractants have been used enhance trap captures mosquitoes, it is logical test these against closely related hematophagous Diptera such as Culicoides. This study compared four attractant lures, octenol, BG lure, R-octenol, USDA red blend, be attractive tested them C. furens mississippiensis an addition increase capture. Although all increased capture above control, results from this could not identify lure was significantly more Culicoides species captured in Cedar Key, Florida. Further studies evaluating specific types well needed develop effective trapping system part integrated insect program.
